Abstract

Even though many texts written by EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students do not present any grammar mistakes, or problems with vocabulary use, they often sound stilted and unnatural. At times, this can be caused by the overuse and mi- suse of cohesive devices. The present study was designed to investigate the use of connectors in paragraphs and essays written by EFL college majors in two English language teaching programs in Mar del Plata and to determine the extent to which text type and length affect the use of such devices. 200 texts written by freshmen and sophomore were analyzed. Results show that most EFL majors overused con- nectors, especially to write short texts like paragraphs and that second year students used less connectors when composing their essays. Pedagogical implications for the EFL writing class will be discussed considering the results obtained.
